Why Choose Custom Furniture?

There are many factors that can lead someone to work with a local furniture maker. Those can range from the obvious, such as needing furniture that fits specific dimensions that you can't find elsewhere, to the desire to make a dream design come to life, or simply because a local furniture maker will generally provide a higher-quality product, compared to off-the-shelf solutions you may find at larger companies.

Custom Fit

This is one of the main reasons we get calls from clients in the Milwaukee Area for custom furniture. You've found the perfect piece online; however, it simply won't fit in your space. It's either too large, or too small, or even the wrong shape. A great example of that is the small table we built. Their dining area would have been too cramped with larger, off-the-shelf tables.

We can work with you to iron out exactly what you want, work with your inspirations, and build you When you're looking for furniture that fits your space and your style, off-the-shelf options often fall short. Custom furniture lets you choose the dimensions, the wood, and the details—so the piece belongs in your home from day one.

Design your Dream Piece

Another reason you may seek out a custom furniture maker, or woodworker, in Milwaukee is to get an expert craftsman to help you bring your ideas to life. We can work together throughout the process from inspirations, to full design, to finishes and hardware to craft exactly what you want. We did this with the walnut dining table we built. The lumber was sourced from our client's back yard. They helped decide exactly how we oriented the pieces on the top, and because they were able to use CAD software, they helped design the legs to be exactly what they wanted.

While not everyone is able to spin up CAD and draw furniture, we can. And we're more than happy to go through as many iterations as is necessary to get you the perfect piece of furniture. This is one of the fun parts for us, and it's why we do this.

Luxury Quality Furniture

Many folks are happy with the designs and dimensions they see in larger stores; however, they want solid lumber, locally sourced wood, and expert craftpersons building their furniture to ensure that is the highest quality. While this doesn't need to be the reason you come to Goldthorne Studio, this is what we do with every project.

We spend immense amount of time on the details. Grain is oriented to be pleasing and flow well. Designs are poured over to ensure they're comfortable, ergonomic, and durable. Finishes are applied meticulously so you don't have to worry about damaging the piece with regular use. If you're curious about the woods we use, see our guide on choosing hardwoods for your project.

Trey started building his own furniture because he was tired of having to replace his furniture after a year or two due to regular use. He built the furniture in his home to take a beating. After nearly a decade, even his highest use pieces look incredible. And if or when the time comes to give them a freshen up, solid wood furniture allows for that. Some of the furniture you pay for from bigger stores simply can't be refinished because they're not made from materials that allow for that.

Here in the Milwaukee area, we're lucky to have a strong tradition of craft. Goldthorne Studio builds each piece in our local shop, using domestic hardwoods and traditional joinery. Whether you need a dining table, a bookcase, or custom cabinetry, we work with you from design through delivery.

If you're in the Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, Shorewood, or surrounding areas and have a project in mind, get in touch. We'd love to hear from you.
